Currently, I am a sales associate for a large telecommunications firm. I have significant experience in sales, customer service, adult training, sales forecasting, and bench marking analysis. Frankly, I hate this job and want to do something that would allow me to make an impact on the lives of others. So, here’s my plan….

Plan: Complete M.A. in History (Emphasis in American History) at a fully accredited online school. By fully accredited I mean regionally accredited.
My wife and I will then moved to city "x" where I can easily complete an M.A. in Political Science (Emphasis in American Government) at a local university.
Finally, I plan to take the handful (as in 12 hours or less) of course work and student teaching at the local university to get certified.

I know social studies teachers are expected to coach. I wasn’t a really “sports” kind of guy in high school or college. I can coach any academic sport or club though, frankly, that’s what I was involved in, in high school.

Alright social studies teachers, does this sound like someone you’d like to hire? Is this person over qualified? Is there such a thing as an over qualified educator? Give me some thoughts, I’d like to know if I’ve got a good course of action laid out.

I will be very honest. Many school districts right now are not looking to hire teachers period, because they are laying hundreds if not thousands off. Social studies teachers are a dime a dozen, and most of them usually are over qualified. You have a wonderful plan, however to be blunt, you need to know someone with power were you want to get a job, or you’ll be looking for a long time. Now with your work experience what about going a math or science route? That would almost guarantee you a job where ever you want.
Also I don’t know how long ago you graduated, but you what ever path you choose you want to make sure you are properly certified to teach. A master’s degree doesn’t mean anything if you aren’t certified to teach.
